PEI potato processing plant lay offs
November 8, 2013 By The Canadian Press
November 8, 2013, New Annan, PEI – Cavendish Farms has announced that 60 people are being laid off from the potato processing plant in New Annan, P.E.I.
It says the changes are in response to increased production capacity from both North America and European competitors.
In a statement, Ron Clow, vice president of Cavendish Farms, says a review of the production of French fries over the summer found the company needed to find efficiencies to reduce costs.
Clow says the company has worked hard to minimize the impact on employees through early retirement options and reassignments, but the change also meant reducing its hourly production workforce by 60 people effective immediately.
He says the company is making efforts to assist those affected with early retirement and severance packages.
