Weather ruining Ont. asparagus crop

May 27, 2011 – Wet, cool weather has claimed about $4 million worth of Ontario asparagus that growers had to dump when the spears developed a problem called purple spot.

And the damage isn’t done yet, as the crop is now healthy but wholesale prices aren’t, said John Jaques of Sunshine Farms in Thamesville and a director of the Ontario Asparagus Growers’ Marketing Board.
