April 19, 2011, Guelph, Ont – Syngenta has announced that Callisto® 480SC herbicide – known for control of annual broadleaf weeds – has received a Minor Use Label Expansion for highbush and lowbush blueberries from the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA).

Callisto 480SC was granted an Emergency Use Registration for blueberries in 2010.

The label expansion is welcome news for blueberry growers as it provides them with an effective tool to control competitive weeds.

Callisto owes its origins to the discovery of a natural compound exuded from the Callistemon plant that provides it with a defense against other competing vegetation. This compound provided the chemical foundation to build mesotrione, the active ingredient in Callisto 480SC.

In highbush and lowbush blueberries, Callisto 480SC can be applied up to the eight-leaf stage of weeds prior to crop bloom at a rate of 0.12L/ac. This herbicide provides control of lamb’s-quarters, redroot pigweed, velvetleaf, wild mustard, eastern black nightshade as well as suppression of common ragweed.
