Wasted watermelons could yield nutrients, fuel

Aug. 28, 2009 – Researchers at the USDA have established that
watermelons not sold for food use due to cosmetic imperfections could
be a source of nutraceutical ingredients and biofuel.

Aug. 28, 2009 – Around 20 per cent of all watermelons
grown in the US are ploughed back into the field because they are
misshapen or have surface blemishes, according to Wayne Fish of the
USDA-Agricultural Research Service's South Central Agricultural
