Vineland presents on consumer-driven apple breeding

January 27, 2021  By Fruit and Vegetable

As part of the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Convention (OFVC) Education Series, Vineland Research and Innovation Centre in Vineland, Ont., contributed a presentation on consumer-driven apple breeding.

Led by Rachael LeBlanc, a research scientist in plant breeding at Vineland, the presentation discusses how Vineland’s Consumer Insights team identified key attributes that consumers wanted in their apples, and used this information to establish a test orchard containing 33,000 unique apple trees. The presentation also goes into the annual analysis of the desired characteristics and other techniques used by the team.

The Education Series was developed in place of the usual in-person convention for 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. OFVC is hosting many other presentations, and makes the videos available shortly after the video launch date. For more information, visit the OFVC Education Series website. |WATCH THE VIDEO
