Vineland welcomes senior research fellow

– Dr. Hannah Mathers has been appointed as a senior research fellow at
the Vineland Research and Innovations Centre, an independent,
not-for-profit corporation established to create a world-class hub for
horticultural science and innovation in Ontario.

September 10, 2008, Vineland, Ont. – Dr. Hannah Mathers has been appointed as a senior research fellow at the Vineland Research and Innovations Centre, an independent, not-for-profit corporation established to create a world-class hub for horticultural science and innovation in Ontario.

Dr. Mathers is an associate professor in the department of horticulture and crop science at Ohio State University (OSU). She is also the OSU Extension specialist in nursery and landscape crops and co-chair of the OSU Nursery Short Course program. Prior to her appointment at OSU in September 2000, Dr. Mathers was an assistant professor with Oregon State University at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center.

As a senior research fellow at Vineland, Dr. Mathers will focus on research initiatives, industry projects and outreach activities to assist the Ontario nursery and landscape industry. Working closely with Landscape Ontario, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the University of Guelph, the Ontario nursery growers, as well as with the rest of the Vineland team, Dr. Mathers will help develop a research program designed to address the industry's highest priority issues and requirements.

Born and raised in Exeter, Ont., Dr. Mathers received her forest technician’s diploma at Sir Sandford Fleming College in Lindsay, Ont. She earned an associate diploma in agriculture at the University of Guelph, a bachelor of science degree in plant science at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, a master of science degree in horticulture at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, and a Ph.D. in horticulture from Michigan State University.

Dr. Mathers will be conducting several on-site visits and trials in 2008, and will be hosting a research day on October 7, 2008 at Vineland to showcase her research program and activities to date.
