Understanding fruit tree irrigation needs

It’s been a growing season of extremes so far – frost concerns; dry, hot weather; and now, sporadic, but extreme, rainfall. Knowing how to gauge when tree crops need a little extra help from irrigation can have major impacts on fruit yield, quality and size. Balancing the needs of the crop with the rising cost of energy for irrigation will help keep irrigation effective and economical.

Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) fruit specialists Kathryn Carter and Erika DeBrouwer, irrigation engineer Rebecca Shorttt, and new tender fruit and grape field specialist Celina Callo Simonnet have created a resource on tree fruit irrigation.
