8, 2011, Madrid, Spain – Spanish farmers whose revenue has been devastated by
the E. coli outbreak have given away tons of everything from cherry tomatoes to
bulky water melons to draw attention to their plight.

the E. coli outbreak have given away tons of everything from cherry tomatoes to
bulky water melons to draw attention to their plight.

Hundreds
of people lined up under a blazing sun in Madrid to edge their way past tables
brimming with produce from all over Spain and grab handouts.

They
walked away with plastic bags or cardboard crates bulging with peppers,
tomatoes, apricots and just about everything else that Spain grows this time of
year.

Farm
leaders blasted an EU aid offer of 150 million Euros for farmers across Europe
as insufficient and ill-timed. They said the EU must first find the source of
the bacterial outbreak and restore consumer confidence.
