May 8, 2008, Summerside, P.E.I. – The Prince Edward Island Potato Board is donating 18,000 kilogram of top-quality spuds to the Greater Boston Food Bank.
The donation is part of International Year of the Potato .
Ivan Noonan, a board spokesman, says Boston is a very important market for Island potatoes.
Noonan says even though Island farmers are struggling to make ends meet due to high fuel and fertilizer costs, they were willing to contribute a portion of their crop to the less fortunate.
“They know difficult financial times are hard on families and wanted to do their part to help provide food for the hungry,” he said.
