B.C. farms receive funding from the Agricultural Enhancement Grants
The Agricultural Enhancement Grants project focus for 2019 was the revitalization of unused or underutilized land in the Agriculture Land Reserve (ALR) located within the Abbotsford area with an environmental and sustainability objective to create more usable and productive farmland. Specifically, innovative practices to increase both the capacity and productivity in the use of the ALR land for food production.
The three successful projects that were approved for funding fit this criteria:
FarmFolk CityFolk – Organic Seed Production Project
The objective and outcome of this project is to transform 3.5 acres of currently fallow farmland into organic seed production. The seed farm will bring research and educational goals together with an economically viable farm that will generate revenue through the sale of high-quality seeds. Land productivity will be increased over a ten-year plan by developing skills in seed production and establishing higher-value seed crops.
Field House Brewing Co. – Field House Farms Project
Newly purchased five acre farm on Matsqui Prairie which is currently not being farmed will be converted into productive farmland. This project aims to plant 2.5 acres in barley (not a usual crop for Abbotsford area but they have developed a proven method with success) wheat, and oats, along with revitalizing existing fruit tree orchard and maximizing fruit and vegetable production processes.
Holbrow Farms - Revitalization of ALR land
This objective of this project is to revitalize 3.5 acres of farmland into vegetable and fruit production. Applicants will turn some of the land into a flowering pasture & flowering crops such as sunflowers to establish an apiary that will sustain the vegetable plots and fruit trees. The focus will be on producing a high-quality product in a sustainable way and creating a viable revenue stream.
