OMAFRA: Six new pesticide label expansions through minor use program

November 2, 2022  By Fruit & Vegetable

Josh Mosiondz, minor use co-ordinator with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), has announced six new pesticide label expansions recently approved by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA).

  • Eragon LQ herbicide has been registered for control or suppression of labelled weeds in raspberry and blackberry in Eastern Canada and British Columbia (excluding the Peace River Region). Eragon LQ was already labelled for management of weeds on a wide range of crops in Canada. These minor use proposals were submitted by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Pest Management Centre (AAFC-PMC) as a result of minor use priorities established by growers and extension personnel.
  • Kanemite miticide has been approved for control of two-spotted spider mites on Crop Subgroup 13-07B (Bushberries). Kanemite was already labeled for management of insects on a wide range of crops in Canada. This minor use proposal was submitted by the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Fisheries.
  • Exirel insecticide has been registered for control of Allium leaf miner on Allium bulb vegetables. Exirel was already labelled for management of insects on a wide range of crops in Canada. This minor use proposal was submitted by OMAFRA.
    • Note: Allium leafminer has not been detected in Canada. This label expansion was submitted pre-emptively in the event of detection in Canada.
    • Exirel is toxic to certain beneficial arthropods, including some predatory and parasitic insects, spiders and mites, as well as bees. Do not apply this product to blooming crops or weeds while bees are actively visiting the treatment area. Apply early in the morning or late in the evening when bees are not active. Minimize spray drift to reduce harmful effects on beneficial arthropods and bees in habitats close to the application site.
  • Ridomil Gold 480 SL fungicide has been approved for suppression of downy mildew on green onions. Ridomil Gold 480 SL was already labelled for management of diseases on a wide range of crops in Canada. This minor use proposal was submitted by the AAFC-PMC.
  • Centurion herbicide has been registered for control or suppression of labelled weeds in rutabaga, green onion and leeks in Canada. Centurion was already labelled for management of weeds on a wide range of crops in Canada. These minor use proposals were submitted by AAFC-PMC and the Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec.
  • Oberon miticide has been approved for control of two-spotted spider mites on Crop Subgroup 3-07B (Green Onion subgroup). Oberon was already labelled for management of insects on a wide range of crops in Canada. This minor use proposal was submitted by the AAFC-PMC.
    • Oberon is toxic to certain beneficial arthropods, including some predatory and parasitic insects, spiders and mites, and may be toxic to bee brood. Minimize spray drift to reduce harmful effects on beneficial arthropods and bees in habitats close to the application site.

These products are toxic to non-target terrestrial plants and/or aquatic organisms. Observe spray buffer zones specified under Directions for Use. To reduce run-off from treated areas into aquatic habitats, avoid application to areas with a moderate to steep slope, compacted soil, or clay. Avoid application when heavy rain is forecast. Contamination of aquatic areas as a result of run-off may be reduced by including a vegetative filter strip between the treated area and the edge of the water body.

Follow all other precautions, restrictions, and directions for use on the product’s label carefully.
