OMAFRA: Apple staging, thinning, and pest and disease development as of May 17

As of May 17, thinning of apple orchards is top of mind for growers across Ontario, according to tree fruit specialist Erika deBrouwer and IPM specialist Kristy Grigg-McGuffin, both with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA).

Many growers are familiar with the nibble thinning approach, but it is important to reaffirm the benefits of this practice. Taking a little off at every opportunity to get to that ideal crop load will aid you in the long term and may save you money and time dependent on when you reach your target.
