NS grower reports strawberry virus

April 12, 2013  By Canadian Press

April 12, 2013, Great Village, NS – A longtime strawberry farmer in Nova Scotia says two viruses have withered an early crop of his berries.

Curtis Millen of Great Village says several local growers have also been affected.

He says the viruses are being carried from plant to plant by insects.

Millen says the viruses will affect his strawberry crop for June and part of July.

Agriculture Minister John MacDonell says the viruses are affecting four farms in the Debert area, although there is little evidence of it in the Annapolis Valley or other parts of the province.

MacDonell says his department believes the problem can be eradicated over time through the use of spray.
