Tawse Winery, a small family
operation located in Vineland, finished this year’s Wine Access Canadian Wine
Awards’ competition in front of all other Ontario wineries and a very close second for the best Canadian Winery. This
competition is one of the most important of its kind in the country, with an
impressive 960 Canadian wines entered.

The tasting panel, which is composed of
Canada’s leading sommeliers, wine writers, buyers, industry professionals and journalists,
tasted each wine blind and rated them in 30 different categories. Tawse won a
total of 14 medals; 2 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze. Owner Moray Tawse and Winemaker
Paul Pender are extremely pleased with the results and said that this is a good
indication that Tawse can consistently produce quality wines year in and year
out (Tawse finished 9th at last year’s competition).

Since its
official opening in 2005, Tawse winery has embraced the principals of organic
and biodynamic viticulture. The impact on the wines has been profound.  In addition to these philosophies, it
has initiated several sustainable practices at the winery including horse drawn
plow to avoid soil compaction, sheep for leaf plucking, blue birds and cover
crops for integrated pest management, chickens for light soil tilling,
geothermal heating, a waste water biofilter and naturally cooled and humidified
cellars.

Most of these award winning wines
can be purchased at the retail shop or online at www.tawsewinery.ca.
