Canada has a new agriculture minister and she’s the first woman to hold the post in Canadian history.
Marie-Claude Bibeau takes over the post from Lawrence MacAulay, who moves the head of Veterans Affairs, in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s minor cabinet shuffle.
“It’s a huge privilege. I come from a rural riding — a dairy riding actually in the south of Quebec — so I’m already very close to the agricultural producers in Quebec. I know quite a bit about supply management and I really look forward to working with the agricultural producers on various issues,” Bibeau said following the swearing-in ceremony.
Bibeau, who represents the Quebec riding of Compton–Stanstead, has been known as a voice on rural issues in cabinet. She had been Trudeau’s minister for La Francophonie, as well as for International Development, from the onset of the Trudeau government. The La Francophonie portfolio was transferred to Mélanie Joly in a July 2018 shuffle.
