New Manitoba spud rules spur conflict

Man – Conflict between small Manitoba potato growers and Peak of the Market has
sprouted again, this time over new regulations intended to legalize the
practice of growing small quantities of potatoes for sale at roadside stands,
seasonal grocers and farmers’ markets.

practice of growing small quantities of potatoes for sale at roadside stands,
seasonal grocers and farmers’ markets.
Under rules that took
effect March 31, 2010, anyone who grows less than five acres of potatoes in
Manitoba may sell their tubers without going through Peak of the Market,
provided they register with the provincial marketing board.
