February 25, 2009, Dorchester, Ont. – Growers can control a host of soil-borne diseases, insects, nematodes and weeds before planting with a new formulation of Vapam HL® liquid soil fumigant.

The new formulation contains more than 30 per cent more active ingredient than previously.

Vapam HL, with the active ingredient metam sodium, is a soil fumigant used as a soil treatment before planting. While registered for a long list of vegetable and floral crops, Vapam HL is most widely used in Canada in tomatoes, potatoes and ginseng crops.

“The new formulation has a higher concentration which means a tank-full goes a lot further and that there’s less handling required,” said Irwin Schmidt, consultant.

The list of pests that Vapam HL suppresses or controls includes all species of nematodes (when proper contact is achieved), diseases such as rhizoctonia, Pythium, Phytophtora, Verticillium, Fusarium and Sclerotinia, as well as germinating weed seeds.

There are various methods for the application of Vapam HL, including chemigation, drip applications, soil injection, treatment of potting soil and band injection.
