New farming assistance grant program for Ontario county

November 23, 2018  By Fruit & Veg magazine

Young and new farmers can now apply for funding from the Prince Edward county’s innovative Farming Assistance Grant Program.

“Agriculture has and continues to be a vital pillar of our local economy,” says Robert Quaiff, Mayor, County of Prince Edward. “This grant program will give young and new farmers a hand up as they strive to build the next generation of farm operations in Prince Edward County.”

Eligible farmers will receive a minimum of $300 up to a maximum of 20 per cent of their annual municipal farm tax bill, whichever is greater. The grant program is open to farmers who are either between the ages of 18 and 39 or who have been farming for less than seven years, as determined by their Farm Business Number. Farming must also be the primary occupation of the young or new farmer applying for the grant. Farmers who own or lease land are eligible to apply.

The municipality is now accepting applications for the Farming Assistance Grant Program. A letter from a third-party professional is also required with the application to confirm occupation and ownership information.

While the deadline to apply is December 14, 2018, the municipality will process applications as they are received in order to expedite the delivery of grants to qualifying young and new farmers.

More details, including the application form, can be found on the Farming Assistance Grant Program webpage. Applications must be dropped off in person at the Finance Department located on the second floor of the Edward Building in Picton (280 Picton Main Street).
