The
university has also invested $500,000 and says there is plans to raise a
further $1 million to ensure the chair will be endowed in perpetuity, McGill
said in a release.

Based
in the faculty of agricultural and environmental sciences, the chair will lead
McGill’s newly established food safety and quality program, an
interdisciplinary teaching and research initiative.

It
is hoped that the Canadian food industry will be able to draw on the expertise
offered by the program to address the complex scientific, legal and policy
issues of global food safety, the university said.

The
appointment of the first chair holder is expected within the coming year.

Munro,
who is executive vice-president and senior scientific consultant of Cantox
Health Sciences International
in Mississauga, Ont., has devoted his career to
identifying and controlling toxic constituents in food.
