Island potato farmers finally get good news with higher prices
After so much bad news, including substantial weather-related
losses, there’s finally some good news for P.E.I. potato producers.
P.E.I. – After so much bad news, including substantial weather-related losses, there’s finally some good news for P.E.I. potato producers.
Prices for Island spuds are up – way up – at the start of the export season.
“The average dealer price for a package of 10 is $2.21. This time last year it was 95 cents,” says Kevin MacIsaac, chair of the P.E.I. Potato Board.
To what does he attribute the surge in prices?
Supply.
“There’s fewer planted acres across the country,” he says. “There are no surplus “potatoes.”
MacIsaac also said a promotional effort involving the recent Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto appeared to strike pay dirt.
About 25,000 kilograms of Island potatoes were transported by truck to the event and distributed free of charge to visitors in small packages of four.
“We had a good response,” said MacIsaac.
