September 2, 2008, Millville, N.S. – Federal agriculture officials will tour parts of Cape Breton later this week to assess crop damage due to heavy rains.

Nova Scotia Agriculture Minister Brooke Taylor met with his federal counterpart Gerry Ritz over the weekend to discuss disaster assistance.

Some island farmers have lost upwards of $400,000 worth of fruit and vegetable crops.

Taylor says officials will have to speak with individual farmers before deciding on the level of assistance needed.

The minister saw the damaged crops for himself during a tour of the Millville area on August 12, where farmers grow lettuce, beans, corn, strawberries and other produce.

At the time he said some sort of assistance was indisputable.
