resistant potato variety.
January 5, 2009 – With the recent introduction of a new virulent strain of potato blight in Europe, potato researchers in Ireland are investigating the use of genetic modification to develop a blight resistant potato variety.
According to a recent article in The Times (United Kingdom), researchers with Teagasc’s research facility in County Carlow are hoping to create a potato variety that will only require a maximum of four fungicide sprays per year opposed to the current 12 sprays farmers are required to apply.
