Cabrio Plus fungicide registered for potatoes

July 10, 2012, Mississauga, Ont – BASF Canada Inc. (BASF) has received regulatory approval for Cabrio Plus fungicide for the control of early blight and late blight in potatoes.

Cabrio Plus works by combining two products effective on both diseases: Cabrio Plus contains metiram, a multi-site EBDC fungicide that is also found in Polyram, and pyraclostrobin, a broad-spectrum strobilurin fungicide that is also the active ingredient found in Headline fungicide.

Cabrio Plus contains 14 per cent zinc in a low dust formulation that disperses in water easily. It is also rainfast within one hou.

Cabrio Plus works in several different ways. The pyraclostrobin ingredient stops spores before they germinate, preventing them from infecting plant tissue by interfering with fugal cell energy production. This causes the fungus to stop growing and die. Pyraclostorin also provides AgCelence, which may improve stress tolerance and increase yield compared to a protectant used alone.

Metiram, the other ingredient in Cabrio Plus, is a non-systemic, preventative fungicide that forms a protective barrier on the plants surface. When fungi try to penetrate this barrier, metiram disrupts multiple biological processes of fungal amino acid production, stopping fungal growth.

“The introduction of Cabrio Plus will offer potato growers multiple modes of action on early and late blight in a convenient co-formulation,” says Scott Hodgins, technical specialist for horticultural products with BASF Canada.
