Blaze strikes Ontario potato farm

June 18, 2012, Nixon, Ont – No injuries were reported in a fire west of Simcoe, Ont., this weekend that destroyed a machine shed and a large number of plastic produce bins.

The fire occurred on the potato farm of Frank Verbrugge just before noon June 16. The blaze sent a gigantic plume of smoke billowing into the air that was visible for miles around. According to reports, the fire likely began when an all-terrain vehicle started a grass fire near the machine shed. The 2,250-square-foot building and its contents were destroyed, as were nearly 800 large plastic bins stacked beside it. READ MORE
