Ag development committee examine processing hub

July 25, 2014, Chatham, Ont – There was a time when almost every community in Chatham-Kent had one or more canning factories to handle some of the local agricultural production, and those factories added value and provided local jobs.
Recent years have seen the closure of producers, including Campbell’s in Chatham and Nestle in Wallaceburg, but a group of volunteers is hoping to eventually see a processing hub established in the municipality that will allow small producers to share space at one site and help Chatham-Kent regain its status not merely as a grower of food, but as a processing centre as well.
