A new research and education seed farm launched in B.C.

April 29, 2019  By FarmFolk CityFolk

FarmFolk CityFolk, a not for profit society based in B.C. that works to cultivate a local, sustainable food system, has signed a lease on 3-1/2 acres of land to operate a new research and education seed farm.

The certified organic field is located in Abbotsford at Maple Lane Farms. Owned by Don Campbell, Maple Lane Farm houses multiple projects including an organic dairy; a new greenhouse operation for Lepp Family Farm; a new aquaponics system; and now – a vegetable seed farm.

The lease for the seed farm was facilitated by the Young Agrarians Land Matching Program and Campbell is offering the land and added services in-kind over the life of the five-year lease.

This new farm site is an exciting evolution of the B.C. Seed Security Program and will allow us to produce seeds on a larger scale for commercial sale to raise funds for the program; host farmer training and field day events; conduct organic seed research; host public tasting and outreach events; and much much more.

Taking the lead on farming activities is Char Friesen who has extensive farming and gardening experience and has been working at Maple Lane Farms for a few years now and is very familiar with the land.
