November 3, 2008, Penticton, B.C. – The 2008 B.C. Horticultural Forum, originally scheduled for November 8, has been cancelled due to the closure of Highway 97 between Kelowna and Penticton.
According to a recent report in The Globe and Mail, Highway 97 has been closed between the two cities since October 24 as highway crews work on a $54 million highway expansion project. Work on the project recently ceased due to the development of a metre-wide crack in a bluff above the highway near Summerland.
According to the newspaper report , it’s estimated that if the slope fails, 300,000 cubic metres of hillside could fall onto the road below.
