Survey of farmer mental health ongoing

May 4, 2021  By Fruit and Vegetable

The Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph is conducting a survey, titled “A Survey of Farmer Mental Health in Canada.” Farmers from across Canada are asked to complete the survey to offer a detailed picture of the current state of mental health in Canadian agriculture.

According to the website, the goal of the survey is to investigate the relationships between stress and resilience and to gather important information about the mental health of farmers in Canada. Responses are completely confidential and no identifying information will be gathered.

This follows the release of In the Know, a mental health literacy program developed by the Ontario Veterinary College and aimed at farmers and the agriculture community, in early March.

The survey is likely intended to build on research conducted by veterinarian, epidemiologist and associate professor Andria Jones-Bitton and post-doctoral researcher Briana Hagen, both in the university’s department of population medicine. Jones-Bitton led the original national survey of farmer mental health in 2015 and 2016 and made recommendations to the federal government on how to handle the mental health epidemic in agriculture.

The survey can be accessed here.
