Delegate registered for insect control on potatoes

February 25, 2010 – Delegate WG, a fruit and vegetable insecticide, is now registered for control of the Colorado potato beetle and European Corn Borer.

“This is very good news for Canadian potato growers who are losing yields to these insects,” says Jerry Olechowski, horticulture portfolio manager with Dow AgroSciences. “Since the time Delegate was registered in 2007, other horticultural growers in a wide array of crops have been harvesting the benefits of the technology and now we can add potato growers to the list.”

The active ingredient in Delegate is spinetoram, a Group 5 insecticide that combines the desirable environmental profile of a biological product with the efficacy of synthetic technologies.

Even though Delegate offers higher insecticidal activity on targeted pests, the toxicity of Delegate to natural enemies is low. Delegate, which is formulated as a wettable granule, has limited toxicity to beneficial, predatory insects such as lacewings and ladybird beetles and is nontoxic to bees when the spray residue is dry for three hours.
