TerraSphere Systems develops lighting for plant germination
September 24, 2009, Boston, MA – TerraSphere System engineers have developed a solid state lighting system that is currently being used to support plant germination.

The company is working to apply their advanced system to support the entire growing operation.

TerraSphere Systems designs and builds highly efficient growth carousels, which provide a means of growing fruits and vegetables in an indoor environment.

“The use of solid state lighting allows for misting during the crucial infancy stage as the lights are completely water proof,” said Nick Brusatore, TerraSphere System engineer. “In addition, because the lights are 1/16 of an inch thin, plants can be arranged in a much more dense design allowing increased optimization of propagation space.”

When compared to fluorescent tubes, there are numerous benefits to using solid state lighting including a longer bulb life, resistance to water, lower heat, an approximately 40 per cent savings in power and the ability to create more exact light frequencies. The first application of this system is to raise spinach at the Squamish Nation, Vancouver, B.C. facility.
