The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recently announced the approval of a minor use label expansion for Ranman 400 SC fungicide for suppression of root dieback, forking and cavity spot caused by Pythium spp. on carrots in Canada.
 Ranman 400 SC fungicide is a relatively new product in Canada and was already labeled for management of late blight on potatoes and downy mildew of field cucurbits. This is the second minor use registration of Ranman on a crop grown in Canada.
This will provide carrot growers with a disease management tool to help manage one of their most challenging disease problems. Root dieback, forking and cavity spot have been a minor use priority for carrot producers for many years in both Canada and the USA. In 2003/2004, this minor use project was jointly initiated by the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Pest Management Centre (AAFC-PMC) minor use program and the US IR-4 minor use program.
The following is provided as a general outline only. Users should consult the complete label before using Ranman 400 SC fungicide.
One application of Ranman 400 SC Fungicide can be applied per season to carrots at a rate of 0.44 L per hectare either as a post-plant, pre-emergent application within three days after planting or as a soil-directed spray 14 days after planting.
Post-plant, pre-emergent application: apply Ranman to the soil within three days after planting/seeding of carrots. Apply in sufficient water to obtain full coverage and follow with sprinkler irrigation of 1.25 to 2.5 cm of water to properly move the product to the root zone.
For a surface application, soil directed spray: apply Ranman 14 days after planting in sufficient water to obtain adequate coverage with the applications directed to the base of the plants. Ranman should be incorporated into the soil with 1.25 to 2.5 cm of water. For banded applications, a 15.2 to 20.3 cm band is recommended (see label for calculations).
Boom height must be 60 cm or less above the crop or ground and the preharvest interval is 30 days.
Ranman 400 SC fungicide should be used in an integrated pest management program and in rotation with other management strategies. Follow all other precautions and directions for use on the Ranman 400 SC fungicide label.
