New insecticide approved for CPB and aphid control on potatoes
Written by Fruit and Vegetable Magazine
Assail® insecticide, from DuPont Canada, has been approved for control of aphids and Colorado potato beetle in potatoes, giving growers a new choice for insect control.

Research shows Assail gives residual control for two to three weeks on Colorado potato beetle. In addition, it has effective residual control on aphids.

Assail provides both systemic and translaminar activity and is absorbed into the plant tissue and moves through the leaf to protect new shoots and the under side of the leaf in addition to the surface where the product is applied.

The active ingredient acetamiprid, belongs to the neonicotinoid class of insecticides, which disrupt nerve transmission in target insects. Assail has an anti-feeding effect which prevents pest damage to host plants well before the death of the insect.

Assail is registered as a Reduced Risk Pesticide with the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA). The product rapidly degrades in the soil, with no concerns about carryover. It is also an excellent tool for Integrated Pest Management, allowing growers to spray if and when they have a pest problem.

Assail is available through your local retailer for the 2005 growing season.

For more information about Assail or any DuPont product, contact your local crop protection retailer, DuPont representative, or call the DuPont Support Centre at 1-800-667-3925 or visit www.dupont.ca/ag
